NEW DELHI: Internet services provider Spectranet will invest Rs 500 crore over the next five years to increase its broadband infrastructure, number of retail subscribers and create hotspots in India.

The Shyam Group-promoted company may raise money from bank loans, internal accruals and by offloading up to 26% stake by June to private equity investors, Spectranet director Udit Mehrotra told ET. Shyam Group had acquired Spectranet from Punj Lloyd in 2008.

Spectranet will change its strategy and focus more on retail customers than enterprises. It will use direct-selling strategy adopted by the likes of consumer goods majors Amway, Mary Kay and Tupperware to sell Internet-usage plans promoting unlimited download.

The money will be spent in expanding optical fibre network to 30,000 km in Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad and 94 more cities within five years. The company will hire more than 400 people to service clients.

India has more than 10.5 million broadband subscribers largely serviced on demand by established players like BSNL, MTNL, Airtel, Reliance and Hathway. Spectranet plans to increase its subscriber base from 50,000 to 2 million in five years by direct selling.

Established telecom companies have over 97% of the internet market in the country, and so far, standalone players such as Spectranet have failed to make an impact in this segment. The broadband space is set to witness fresh competition with the entry of Reliance Industries , the only company that has airwaves to offer wireless data services across the country.

Mehrotra says the company’s USP of unlimited download at any price point for the consumer and last-mile connectivity on wireless or wired network has helped it get 50,000 customers over the last nine months.
Spectranet will also create 5,000 hotspots or zones providing free internet access in six cities, up from 500 hotspots.

Internet services provider Spectranet is planning to invest Rs 100 crore over the next 12 months in a bid to ramp up its broadband infrastructure in the country. The Shyam Group-owned company is expanding its optical fibre network from six cities to 30 cities by December 2011.
Speaking to Business Line, Mr Udit Mehrotra, Director, Spectranet, “We are looking at Rs 100 crore investment over the next 12-14 months. We plan to fund it through debt and internal approvals and at some later stage private equity as well.”

Subscriber base
Shyam Group had acquired Spectranet from Punj Lloyd in 2008 and has 50,000 subscribers. The company is looking to triple its subscriber base in the next 12-14 months.
“When we bought Spectranet it was a small and medium enterprise-focused broadband player. So if you wanted an Internet connection, Spectranet could provide that to you. Post the acquisition we have broadened our focus. We have moved both horizontally and vertically. We wanted to be a player not just in the broadband and enterprise space but to go beyond that. We have gone ahead from a mere Internet connectivity player to be more integrated communications service provider,” Mr Mehrotra said.
Spectranet has so far rolled out about 2,000 route km of optical fibre cables across Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad and is planning to expand it to 6,000 km. “We are building our own fibre infrastructure because we believe the data requirement is only going to go up from this point. In India, not only are we looking at a rapid increase in penetration but we are also looking at a rapid increase in the usage per person or usage per household. The total bandwidth requirement is going to grow and which can only be handled by fibre network,” Mr Mehrotra said.

Cluster approach
While Spectranet is expanding its presence across various cities, it is adopting a cluster approach whereby optic fibre cable is being rolled out to specific areas within a city. “Our approach is that we go after a cluster where we want to focus; we offer our solutions in a focused and concentrated manner to get a higher market share and that’s what helps us to keep our cost low and provide better quality of service. The way we benchmark success doesn’t lie in having 10,000 customers in 10 cities. Success lies in having 10,000 customers in one city,” Mr Mehrotra added.

Emergence of mobile phones as the preferred means of communications has taken its toll on the fixed line services in India. As per data provided by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, the wireline service subscriber base declined from 39.41 million at the end of March 2008 to 37.96 million at the end of March 2009. The subscriber base further showed a decline of one million with 36.96 millions wireline users at the end of March 2010. At the end July 2010 wireline subscriber stood at 35.96 million subscribers with wireline teledensity of 3.04 per cent.

 

Rajat Arora, chief operating officer, Spectranet, agrees that “In India DSL services are contributing to the growth of wired services.”He, however, states that, “the trend is changing with the adoption of wireless broadband. With BWA roll outs happening in the next 12-18 months, wireless will gain strong momentum and wired services will ultimately recede.”
