Spectranet & Netmagic Enter into a Strategic Partnership

Spectranet, India’s fastest growing integrated communication services provider and Netmagic Solutions, India’s largest pure-play Managed IT Hosting Services Provider, today announced a strategic partnership to collaborate across multiple business avenues.

As part of this partnership Spectranet will set up India’s first multi-location commercial DiD (Datacenter-in-Datacenter) across Netmagic’s datacenters in Mumbai, Noida, Bangalore and Chennai.  Spectranet will independently deliver service and support to their customers hosted at the DiDs, with Netmagic providing the core datacenter infrastructure support and services.  This is the first such deal in the datacenter space in India where a communication services provider has partnered with a pure-play Data Center Service provider.

Also as part of this deal, Netmagic will benefit from Spectranet’s vast fibre and IP network and shall be able to extend these services to its customers. However, Netmagic will continue to be a carrier neutral hosting provider.

The partnership opportunity is worth Rs. 200 Crores and will help Spectranet and Netmagic leverage each other’s core competencies to deliver greater value to their customers. Globally, in mature markets, this business model is common within the datacenter space, where an end-user focused service provider partners with a pure-play datacenter service provider for collocation space and related services while focusing on customer service & support. This model provides cost and operational efficiencies for both players.

Says Mr. Udit Mehrotra, Managing Director, Spectranet, “While Spectranet has been providing Datacenter services since 2000, our footprint has been largely limited to Delhi and Bangalore region. This partnership will enable us to rapidly roll out services across the top 4 Enterprise and SMB markets in India. The model ensures that the service delivery and management is entirely done by Spectranet, while leveraging the underlying state-of-the-art infrastructure available at the Netmagic facilities. This partnership will also enable Netmagic to leverage Spectranet’s core strengths in intra-city connectivity to offer integrated connectivity and datacenter solutions in the market.”

Says  Mr.  Sharad Sanghi, Founder & CEO, Netmagic Solutions, “We believe that this is a visionary and path-breaking move made by both companies. Given the growth opportunity in the marketplace and cost benefits to be had, the model is a win-win partnership for both organisations. This partnership also comes as an acknowledgment of Netmagic’s leadership position in the Managed IT hosting services space that we have built over the last 14 years”.

Awarded ‘Data Center Service Provider of the Year 2011′ award by Frost & Sullivan, Netmagic  has more than 2,00,000 square feet of datacenter space including the recently launched state-of-the-art 40,000 square feet datacenter in Noida to service the NCR region. The Noida Datacenter was the 7th datacenter for the company in India and its first in North India.

Spectranet plans 500-cr investment, to offload 26%

NEW DELHI: Internet services provider Spectranet will invest Rs 500 crore over the next five years to increase its broadband infrastructure, number of retail subscribers and create hotspots in India.

The Shyam Group-promoted company may raise money from bank loans, internal accruals and by offloading up to 26% stake by June to private equity investors, Spectranet director Udit Mehrotra told ET. Shyam Group had acquired Spectranet from Punj Lloyd in 2008.

Spectranet will change its strategy and focus more on retail customers than enterprises. It will use direct-selling strategy adopted by the likes of consumer goods majors Amway, Mary Kay and Tupperware to sell Internet-usage plans promoting unlimited download.

The money will be spent in expanding optical fibre network to 30,000 km in Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad and 94 more cities within five years. The company will hire more than 400 people to service clients.

India has more than 10.5 million broadband subscribers largely serviced on demand by established players like BSNL, MTNL, Airtel, Reliance and Hathway. Spectranet plans to increase its subscriber base from 50,000 to 2 million in five years by direct selling.

Established telecom companies have over 97% of the internet market in the country, and so far, standalone players such as Spectranet have failed to make an impact in this segment. The broadband space is set to witness fresh competition with the entry of Reliance Industries , the only company that has airwaves to offer wireless data services across the country.

Mehrotra says the company’s USP of unlimited download at any price point for the consumer and last-mile connectivity on wireless or wired network has helped it get 50,000 customers over the last nine months.
Spectranet will also create 5,000 hotspots or zones providing free internet access in six cities, up from 500 hotspots.

Spectranet plans Rs 100-cr expansion

Internet services provider Spectranet is planning to invest Rs 100 crore over the next 12 months in a bid to ramp up its broadband infrastructure in the country. The Shyam Group-owned company is expanding its optical fibre network from six cities to 30 cities by December 2011.
Speaking to Business Line, Mr Udit Mehrotra, Director, Spectranet, “We are looking at Rs 100 crore investment over the next 12-14 months. We plan to fund it through debt and internal approvals and at some later stage private equity as well.”

Subscriber base
Shyam Group had acquired Spectranet from Punj Lloyd in 2008 and has 50,000 subscribers. The company is looking to triple its subscriber base in the next 12-14 months.
“When we bought Spectranet it was a small and medium enterprise-focused broadband player. So if you wanted an Internet connection, Spectranet could provide that to you. Post the acquisition we have broadened our focus. We have moved both horizontally and vertically. We wanted to be a player not just in the broadband and enterprise space but to go beyond that. We have gone ahead from a mere Internet connectivity player to be more integrated communications service provider,” Mr Mehrotra said.
Spectranet has so far rolled out about 2,000 route km of optical fibre cables across Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad and is planning to expand it to 6,000 km. “We are building our own fibre infrastructure because we believe the data requirement is only going to go up from this point. In India, not only are we looking at a rapid increase in penetration but we are also looking at a rapid increase in the usage per person or usage per household. The total bandwidth requirement is going to grow and which can only be handled by fibre network,” Mr Mehrotra said.

Cluster approach
While Spectranet is expanding its presence across various cities, it is adopting a cluster approach whereby optic fibre cable is being rolled out to specific areas within a city. “Our approach is that we go after a cluster where we want to focus; we offer our solutions in a focused and concentrated manner to get a higher market share and that’s what helps us to keep our cost low and provide better quality of service. The way we benchmark success doesn’t lie in having 10,000 customers in 10 cities. Success lies in having 10,000 customers in one city,” Mr Mehrotra added.

Inputs in Telecom Yatra stry:

Are fixedline services fighting a lost battle?

Telecom Yatra

Emergence of mobile phones as the preferred means of communications has taken its toll on the fixed line services in India. As per data provided by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, the wireline service subscriber base declined from 39.41 million at the end of March 2008 to 37.96 million at the end of March 2009. The subscriber base further showed a decline of one million with 36.96 millions wireline users at the end of March 2010. At the end July 2010 wireline subscriber stood at 35.96 million subscribers with wireline teledensity of 3.04 per cent.

Rajat Arora, chief operating officer, Spectranet, agrees that “In India DSL services are contributing to the growth of wired services.”He, however, states that, “the trend is changing with the adoption of wireless broadband. With BWA roll outs happening in the next 12-18 months, wireless will gain strong momentum and wired services will ultimately recede.”

He adds, “In a developing country like India, wireless is a far more reliable medium in terms of service continuity. DSL services are susceptible to high downtimes due to cable-cuts on the last-mile. Wireless services are protected from such issues.”

Spectranet Partners with Drishti-Soft to offer Hosted Contact Centers on the Cloud

Delhi, May 17, 2010: Spectranet and Drishti-Soft are set to enter burgeoning hosted solutions market with their “Cloud CC” offering.  Under this partnership, both companies will offer a range of Hosted Contact Center Solutions to BPOs and enterprise customers.

Speaking on the partnership, Mr. Sunando Bhattacharya, Head-Marketing & Customer Solutions, Spectranet, said, “The hosted contact center business is witnessing a huge growth in India, and the opportunity is very appealing as a new business area. The overall hosted revenues are set to grow at 34.1% CAGR by 2013* and we see a great potential for call center solutions over a hosted platform from verticals such as Telecom, BFSI, Hospitality & Travel, Healthcare, Entertainment and Logistics. India is the largest market with the second fastest growth rate in Asia Pacific and is expected to grow at the rate of 35% in 2010*. Considering this phenomenal growth, Spectranet is happy to partner Drishti-Soft to offer hosted contact center solutions.

The BPO market in India is all set to touch USD 6bn by 2012 and therefore is more receptive for a bouquet of hosted solutions. Over 34% of all BPOs will be using the hosted model within the next decade*. Hosted IT solutions reduce the burden of redundant systems, maintenance and upgrades for companies, while centralized IT setups enable high uptime. By enabling Hosted IT solutions a company can save as much as 41% on Capex in five years* against on-premise solutions and set-ups. End-users get the freedom to purchase only the required modules and bring down the total cost of ownership considerably.

While explaining the benefits of this model, Mr. Vipin Jethi, Vice President – Sales, Drishti, said, “On-demand contact center solutions not only help improve the customer experience but also help organizations improve efficiency and reduce turn-around time & costs. Elimination of heavy capital investments, instant access to cutting-edge technology and rapid results make the model difficult to ignore for the customers.

With a deep focus on collaborative development, the platform is designed to deliver highly affordable futuristic product offerings. The platform is inherently multi-tier, multi-tenant and SaaS (Software as a Service) ready. The extensive APIs (Application Programming Interface) and base architecture of Drishti’s solutions allow multiple application packages support in a single set up. The customer thus gets state-of-the-art, highly reliable call center technology. With low turnaround time and rapid feature development, the bundled solution would be a cost-effective a-la-carte and pay-as-you-go model. The services are currently in Beta testing and are expected to be launched in a month’s time.
